32 Why not? Because they pursued it not by faith but (as if it were possible) by works. They stumbled over the stumbling stone,
32 Wherefore? Because [it was] not on the principle ofD8111 faith, but as of works. They have stumbled at the stumblingstoneD8112,
of - 'As of works.' Ek, here translated 'of,' is translated 'on the principle of' in chs. 1.17; 5.1; 9.32. But this sense is clearer here in having simply 'of' after the 'as,' and the sentence less encumbered. stumblingstone - Christ is the stumblingstone, as Paul goes on to explain.
