16 the water coming downstream toward them stopped flowing. It piled up far upstream at Adam (the city near Zarethan); there was no water at all flowing to the sea of the rift valley (the Salt Sea). The people crossed the river opposite Jericho.
16 the waters which flowed down from above stood [and] rose up in a heap, very far, by Adam, the city that is beside Zaretan; and those that flowed down towards the sea of the plainD1430, the salt sea, were completely cut off. And the people went over opposite to Jericho.
plain - The Arabah. see chs. 11.2,16; 12.1,3; 18.18; Deut. 1.1. Meaning strictly 'dry-[land],' but applied to the narrow strip of land in the Jordan valley on both sides of the river below the lake of Gennesaret. In ch. 4.13 it seems to mean the parts of the Arabah about Jericho.
