40 Joshua defeated the whole land, including the hill country, the Negev, the foothills, the slopes, and all their kings. He left no survivors. He annihilated everything that breathed, just as the Lord God of Israel had commanded.
40 And Joshua smote the whole country, the mountainD1472, and the southD1473, and the lowland, and the hill-slopes, and all their kings: he let none remain, but he utterly destroyed all that breathed, as Jehovah the God of Israel had commanded.
mountain - Or 'hill-country;' and so chs. 11.16,21; 12.8; 18.12; 21.11. south - It appears that the border land between the country that was afterwards allotted to Judah, and the wilderness, was called Negeb, which means 'the South.' See Gen. 12.9.
